How to read the price

What Kijang Emas is, and who sets its price

Kijang Emas is Malaysia's gold bullion coin. It is issued and guaranteed by Bank Negara Malaysia, minted by the Mint Malaysia and distributed by Maybank, in 1 oz, 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz sizes. Bank Negara says the purchase and reselling price is determined by the prevailing international gold market price, and it publishes a list on business days. That list is what this page shows.

Why the buying and selling prices differ

The list has two prices because a coin changes hands in two directions. You pay the higher selling price to buy one and are paid the lower buying price to sell one back. On the latest list, a 1 oz coin has a gap of RM722, or 4.0% of the selling price. The calculator above shows the same gap for any weight.

How this differs from a jeweller's price

Kijang Emas is 999.9 pure and is priced by weight from one public list. Jewellery is usually sold as 916 gold (916 parts in 1,000, or 22 carat) or 999 gold, at a price the jeweller sets, and often includes a charge for the making of the piece. So a jeweller's price per gram is not comparable with the per-gram figure on this page unless the purity and the extra charges are the same.

Why gold moves with the US dollar and the ringgit

Gold is priced internationally in US dollars. A ringgit price is that dollar price converted at the dollar-ringgit rate, so the ringgit price can move because the dollar price moved, because the exchange rate moved, or both. If the dollar price stayed the same and the dollar-ringgit rate rose 5%, the ringgit price would be 5% higher. That is arithmetic, not a forecast of what either will do.

Questions people ask

+What is the gold price in Malaysia today?

The figure at the top of this page is Bank Negara Malaysia's latest Kijang Emas price list, with its date. It covers the 1 oz, 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz coins. Bank Negara publishes on business days, so on weekends and public holidays the page shows the most recent list and says which day it is from.

+Why is there a buying price and a selling price?

They are the two directions of the same trade. The selling price is what you pay to buy a Kijang Emas coin. The buying price is what you are paid if you sell one back. The selling price is higher, and the gap between them is what buying and selling straight back would cost you, before the gold price itself changes.

+Is the Kijang Emas price the same as a jeweller's gold price?

No. Kijang Emas is a 999.9 pure bullion coin priced by weight from Bank Negara's list. A jeweller sets their own price, often for 916 gold (916 parts in 1,000 are gold, which is 22 carat) or 999 gold, and many add a charge for making the piece. Compare like with like: purity, weight and any extra charges.

+How is the price per gram worked out on this page?

We divide the Kijang Emas 1 oz selling price by 31.1034768, the number of grams in one troy ounce. It is a derived figure for pure gold at Bank Negara's list price. It is not a jeweller's price and it is not published by Bank Negara.

+Who sets the Kijang Emas price?

Bank Negara Malaysia says the purchase and reselling price of Kijang Emas is determined by the prevailing international gold market price. The coins are minted by the Mint Malaysia and distributed by Maybank, according to Bank Negara.

+Why does the gold price in ringgit change when the ringgit moves?

Gold is priced internationally in US dollars. To show it in ringgit, the dollar price is converted at the dollar-ringgit rate. If the dollar price stayed the same and the ringgit weakened, the ringgit price would rise by the same proportion, and the other way round.

+Is this investment advice?

No. This page reports a published price and explains how to read it. It does not say whether to buy or sell gold, predict where the price is going, or recommend any dealer, product or app.
