How this is worked out
- Only 20 of 184cards are scored: the ones where our data holds the bank's rate for each category. The other 164state only a headline "up to" rate or miles, which cannot be turned into ringgit honestly. Business cards are left out.
- Cards whose stated income requirement is above yours are left out (4 at this income).
- A rate that needs a minimum monthly spend counts only if your total spend reaches it.
- Monthly caps are applied. Categories stored together share one cap. A card earning 5% or more with no cap in our data, or with no annual fee recorded, is listed separately, not ranked.
- Weekend-only, weekday-only and "selected category" rates are not counted, so cards that rely on them look worse here than they may be.
- Petrol rates tied to one brand count only for the brand you choose.
- The annual fee is taken in full. A waiver is shown, not assumed.
- This is an estimate from the rates in our data, not a promise. Banks set exclusions we may not hold. Check the bank's page before you apply.

How cashback caps work
A cap is the most cashback you can earn in a month. A 5% rate with a RM30 monthly cap stops paying once you spend RM600 in that category (RM30 divided by 5%). Banks also tie higher rates to a minimum total monthly spend. The tool above applies both, using the rates in our data.
Annual fee waivers: read the condition, not the headline
76 of the 184 cards we track have no annual fee at all. 105 more show a fee with a waiver, such as a free first year or a waiver after a number of swipes or a yearly spend. The fee you pay is the full fee unless you meet the condition, so the tool takes the full fee and shows what you would keep if you meet the waiver.
Finance charges and late fees, as Bank Negara sets them
Bank Negara Malaysia puts cardholders in three tiers by payment record. Tier I (paying at least the minimum on time for 12 months in a row) can be charged at most 1.25% a month, 15% a year. Tier II (10 months or more in a 12-month cycle) at most 1.42% a month, 17% a year. Everyone else at most 1.5% a month, 18% a year. Cash advances are capped at 1.5% a month (paragraphs 17.1 and 18.1).
A late payment charge is the lower of 1% of the outstanding balance or RM100, and a minimum charge cannot exceed RM10 (paragraph 20.2). The minimum monthly repayment is at least 5% of the total amount outstanding, plus any instalments (paragraph 13.1). If you carry no balance forward, retail purchases are interest-free for at least 20 calendar days from the statement date (paragraph 18.2).
These are ceilings. A bank may charge less.
Islamic cards: how their fees are built
Islamic cards charge a fixed fee called ujrah for the card's services and privileges, set by card type and not by your credit limit, plus a profit or fee rate on balances that Bank Negara caps at the same 15%, 17% and 18% levels (paragraphs 10.3(b) and 19.1). The Islamic cards page shows each card and how we identify them.
Who can get a card
A principal cardholder must be at least 21 and earn at least RM24,000 a year, which is RM2,000 a month. If you earn RM36,000 a year or less, you can hold cards from at most two issuers, and your credit limit per issuer is capped at twice your monthly income (paragraphs 11.1 and 11.2). Retirees are not subject to the income minimum, but the bank assesses affordability (paragraph 11.3). Each bank sets its own income bar above that, which the table shows.
Questions people ask
+Which credit card is best in Malaysia?
It depends on what you spend and where. A card paying 8% on petrol is worth little to someone who rarely drives. Enter your monthly spending in the tool at the top of this page and it ranks the cards we can score by what they pay back after the annual fee.
+What is the minimum income for a credit card in Malaysia?
Bank Negara requires issuers to ensure a principal cardholder is at least 21 and earns at least RM24,000 a year, which is RM2,000 a month. Retirees are not subject to the income minimum. Each bank then sets its own bar, and the table shows it for every card (paragraphs 11.1 and 11.3 of the Credit Card and Credit Card-i policy document).
+How much interest can a bank charge on a credit card?
At most 15%, 17% or 18% a year on retail balances, depending on your payment record, and at most 18% a year on cash advances (paragraph 18.1). Islamic cards have the same caps on their profit or fee rate (paragraph 19.1). These are ceilings, so a bank may charge less.
+What is the highest cashback rate stated?
Hong Leong Wise Credit Card states up to 15% in our data. That is a headline for selected categories, usually with a cap and a minimum spend, so use the tool to see what it would pay for your spending.
